Tips for a smooth move

Moving often involves more work than you might expect. By preparing thoroughly and starting to pack early, you can avoid stress on moving day. With the right supplies, good planning, and practical moving tips, your move will go much more smoothly.

Preparation

Good preparation makes your move more organized and less stressful. Start by decluttering and only move what you really need. Sell, donate, or take items to a thrift store. Fewer belongings mean a faster and cheaper move.

Make a plan and arrange your moving date, moving company, moving lift (if needed), and any permits or parking spots well in advance. Clearly label your moving boxes with the room, contents, and whether anything is fragile or heavy. Also, keep a separate box with items you’ll need right away.

Don’t forget to notify everyone of your change of address, such as the city, your doctor, bank, insurance companies, employer, and subscription services.

Pack like a pro

Start packing early and begin with items you rarely use. Work room by room for a clearer overview. Use towels or clothing to protect fragile items. It’s best to pack plates upright rather than flat.

If necessary, disassemble furniture and store screws in a small bag that you attach to the piece of furniture. Take photos of the cables before disconnecting them, so reconnecting them later is easier.

Moving tips by room

Moving day

Pack a bag with essential items such as keys, chargers, and personal documents. Place moving boxes directly in the correct room and have one person keep track of everything during the move.

Let your neighbors know in advance, for example, if you’ll be using the elevator or reserving parking spaces. With our moving notification templates, you can easily inform the neighborhood. Download them below.

After moving day

Start by setting up the main rooms, such as the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen. Take your time unpacking everything—it doesn’t have to be done in a single day.

In the meantime, get to know your neighbors, find out how trash collection works, and check where the utility panel and circuit breaker box are located. This will help you quickly get settled into your new home.
